Community Initiative

Family Promise understands the needs of vulnerable families. So, we offer innovative programs — such as tenancy preparation, financial literacy, and virtual career pathway training — to address them in a cost-effective, targeted approach.

HOUSING. CHILDCARE. TRANSPORTATION. EDUCATION.

These challenges—and many others—are among the myriad causes of family homelessness. Through participation in the Family Promise program, volunteers recognize that addressing these barriers can significantly increase their ability to serve more families effectively and with lasting impact.

Community Initiatives: Comprehensive Support for Families
Family Promise’s Community Initiatives encompass a wide range of programs designed to address critical needs and foster long-term self-sufficiency. Key components include:

  • Core Needs: Programs such as childcare and job training, which are essential for families to regain stability.

  • Collaborative Engagement: Matching the strengths of local volunteers and the resources of corporate partners to meet guest needs, including financial literacy training.

  • Expanded Services: Initiatives such as food assistance, furniture and clothing donations, and health and wellness programs, all built on the foundational principles of the Family Promise program.

Housing Programs: A Pillar of Stability
Among the most vital and impactful Community Initiatives are the housing programs operated by Family Promise Affiliates. Transitional housing programs, offered by over 100 Affiliates, collectively provide more than 2,000 beds. These programs serve as a critical foundation, offering families safety, stability, and a pathway toward sustainable independence.

Extending Support Beyond Shelter

A cornerstone of Family Promise’s approach is its most widespread initiative: post-shelter extended support. While housing is a critical first step, the root causes of homelessness require comprehensive solutions to ensure lasting stability. Through services such as family mentoring and case management, Family Promise helps families maintain their progress and avoid a return to homelessness, ensuring that the positive changes made are truly enduring.

Community-Based Solutions

The power of Family Promise lies within the community itself. Examples of innovative, locally driven solutions include:

  • Transitional Housing: Congregations repurposing spaces, such as old rectories, into transitional housing.

  • Childcare Partnerships: Affiliates collaborating with civic groups to create accessible childcare services.

  • Vehicle Donations: Volunteers providing reliable vehicles, often the final piece families need to achieve and sustain independence.

A Legacy of Compassion and Innovation

Since 1988, Family Promise has supported the development of more than 1,700 community initiatives, matching local needs with local resources. These efforts are a testament to the compassion and ingenuity of Family Promise volunteers, proving that sustainable solutions to homelessness are rooted in the strength of the community.
